Saturday: Benenden Chest Hospital Open Day

Article from Kent Messenger

A RARE chance to glimpse inside an operating theatre was taken by more than 200 people when Benenden Hospital held an open day at the weekend.

Tours of the hospital buildings included a stop at the children’s wards, the diagnostic imaging department, which includes ultrasound and X-ray machines, and laminar flow theatres, where the air is kept ultra clean for operating.

A hospital spokeswoman said: “People get images in their heads that theatres look like they are on Casualty with lots of blood and gore, but of course they aren’t.”

Outside there was plenty of entertainment in the style of a summer fair, with stalls, a bucking bronco and Morris and ballet dancers.

The band played two sessions and included a number of soloists, one of them was by Andy Hill our current Principle Cornet player who was still a bit “green around the gills” after a heavy drinking session the night before.
