The Strains of music from a children’s band are a regular feature of Wednesday lunchtimes at Cranbrook primary School.
Under director Robin Traves, seven boys and four girls have gathered once a week to learn how to play instruments including the cornet, trombone and euphonium.
“When Cranbrook Town Band received £54,000 from the National Lottery to replace instruments, there was a condition to use the precious ones to start a youth band,” Mr Traves said.
“We have several young members in the main band but this will be the first youth band in its own right,”
Tuition is free and Mr Traves said the 10 and 11 year olds were “showing a lot of promise”. We lives in Staplehurst and retired as a teacher four years ago. He has belonged to the town band for 10 years and directed Dartford Youth Music Intermediate band for 15 Years.
Fully Fledged
“I love music,” he said. “We hope to have the youth band up and running within a year. We are looking to have a fully fledged youth band.”
Cranbrook Town Band will hold an open day at the borough council offices in Cranbrook High Street from 2-5pm on Saturday March 21. Under the baton of musical director Ian Lanceley, the 35 members will play for visitors.
